“GLOSS” OF
LIFE
It
seems to me today we've got too many females concerned
with the “Gloss” of life. They
seem to make sure their lips are all shiny but not
really taking time out to make sure they’ve
got good foundation down first. Now these metaphors
might be a bit confusing to some people (especially
the men reading this!) so I suppose what I'm trying
to say is "all that glitters is not gold".
I'm
not saying that as ladies we shouldn't enjoy dressing
up and putting on a little jewellery and
make-up, but we need to make sure we are enhancing
ourselves not creating ourselves through these superficial
objects. I mean, you wouldn't coat your lips in sparkly
lip gloss if they were all cracked underneath would
you?
| "I have never
realised before how glossy Fashion/beauty
magazines have become like a bible to some
women" |
Since becoming a Christian, I’ve started to
notice things in everyday life that I had previously
blindly accepted as the ‘norm’. I had
never realised before how glossy(it’s that
word again) fashion/beauty magazines have become
like a Bible to some women;their daily reading is
knowing what the latest celebrity was wearing to
an awards ceremony. And if these magazines have become
their one-dimensional Bibles then there is nothing
more appropriate to be their altars than a mirror.
Un known to them the sacrifices they are making at
this altar are more costly than they could imagine;
constantly scrutinising their self-image and compromising
themselves to fall into the mould that the media
and society has created for them. As ladies, if we
spent the same amount of time trying to change what’s
inside as we do trying to change what’s outside
then we’d be more beautiful than we could ever
imagine.
There are no recipes or diet tips within these magazines
that can feed a starving soul and it

seems that most
of the models on the fashion pages would be better
off eating the magazine than reading it, just for
a bit of nutrition. It’s very true that a picture
can tell a thousand words, so what hope do young
influential women of today have when they are bombarded
with this kind of visual demoralisation? Well thankfully,
there is a hope, and he comes in the form of Jesus
Christ. I’m as guilty as anyone of occasionally
tripping up on the tools of the devil (self-doubt,
worldly acceptance) but I also have an almighty warrior
on my side who when the devil pointed a repulsive
finger and said “I want her” took a mighty
stride and stepped in front of me saying “Take
me instead”. If you break it down you can think of superficial “gloss” as “G-Loss”,
or “God-Loss”. Meaning having a shine
but with no substance. You would never put a coat
of gloss on a wall before stripping the old wallpaper,
plastering the cracks or sanding the walls would
you?
| "It’s knowing
the truth in God’s word alone that
makes believers glow" |
It’s knowing the truth in God’s word
alone that makes believers glow, not a miracle moisturiser
or a compact powder. And it’s pointless to
place your self-value in designer clothes or name
brands. There’s only one name we should be
calling on to justify our souls.
